Taxonomies are treated as configuration and behave like schema. A category renamed without a migration path silently splits a metric in two, and the dashboard keeps reporting a number that no longer describes the same thing.
Treating the taxonomy as a governed artefact — versioned, reviewed, with a documented migration for every change — costs very little and prevents the class of failure nobody notices until a quarterly review.
